We had a fun time creating this one-of-a-kind Steampunk eye-patch goggle. The entire goggle is made from a variety of upcycled parts many of which are vintage. The goggle frame and lenses both originate from vintage eyewear: vintage safety goggles and a vintage optometrist’s test lens frame. The lenses and frame have been separated and are now laminated together with a transparent red enamel that has sealed around the edges leaving a clear bubble “pupil” in the middle surrounded by a red “iris”. They are soldered to the goggle at 4 frame points for a strong attachment. We buffered the goggle frame and padded it for comfort. A non-functional antique stopwatch movement has been fitted to the goggle eye and the transparency of the two laminated lenses allows the mechanical parts of the stopwatch to show-through giving it a strong mechanical “Steampunk” appearance. We created a new head-strap mount and fitted it with an adjustable elastic strap. The strap has a fastener and two leather adjustment slide-buckles. The side of the goggle frame is perfrated to help with air circulation and the lenses are mounted with a slight gap between the stopwatch movement to help prevent fogging. All parts show some wear and/or discoloration. We cleaned things up but also made sure that there’s still a distressed, aged aura to the whole assembly. The head-strap is adjustable, so one size fits most. Wear on your right or left eye as desired. Only one available. Enjoy!
